The first source of the Nyak Chu (Ch Yalong) is the Dza Chu, which is simply the name of one of its upper part feeders. The Dza Chu rises in a mountain to the northeast of the city of Serchul, near Domda (Ch. Qingshuihe). As the river is named Dza Chu, the area is known as Dzachuka, the valley of the Dza Chu.

It affords spacious pasture for nomadic herders, filled with some of the richest grasslands in Tibet, and largely above the treeline. Because one of the sources of the Mekong is called in Tibetan Gyalmo Dza Chu, many people have considered and written that the Dza Chu of Dzachuka is the Mekong, but this is not accurate: to the west of the Dza Chu flows the Dri Chu (Ch. Yangtzé), and to the west of the Dri Chu flows the Gyalmo Dza Chu (Mekong).
