A prominent Nyingma master who studied under Jamgön Kongtrül Lodrö Tayé, Jamyang Khyentsé Wangpo, and Dza Paltrül Orgyen Jikmé Chökyi Wangpo, Jü Mipam Namgyal Gyatso emerged as one of the foremost scholars of his time.

Blessed by Manjushri, he was honored with the title "Omniscient" for his defense of the Dzogchen teachings against polemic attacks and for his philosophical contributions comparable to Longchenpa.

His collected works span over thirty volumes covering a vast range of teachings, and his principal disciple was Zhéchen Gyaltsab Péma Namgyal.

Although a contemporary of Düdjom Lingpa whom he never met in person—but with whom he exhanges letters—, Jü Mipam taught several of Düdjom Lingpa's sons and disciples, including Dodrubchen Jikmé Tenpé Nyima, Khyentsé Trülku Dzamling Wangyal, Namtrül Mipam Dorjé, and Trülku Drimé Özer.
