Along with its counterpart Tak—which is just in front of Yak, on the opposite bank of the Mar Chu—, Chaktsé Tak Yak are the gatekeepers of the sacred mountain of Yungdrung Chaktsé. Tak and Yak are both small mountains, and the residence of local protectors who are part of the entourage of the local deity Yungdrung Chaktsé (Deity). Yak was given this named because its shape reminds that of the yak animal. Oral stories share that when Yungdrung Chaktsé’s entourage is gathered, Yak is always late, because being shaped and named like a Yak, he is naturally slow for moving.
