Ma Qi (1869–1931) was a Hui (Muslim) general and dominant warlord of the Qinghai–Gansu region, serving the Qing dynasty before declaring support for the Republic of China after the abdication of Emperor Puyi in 1912.
Part of the Ma Clique, Ma Qi governed Qinghai from 1915 to 1931, first as governor and then as the province's inaugural chairman. In 1917 he led the siege and occupation of Labrang Monastery in Rebkong — the first time the monastery had fallen to non-Tibetan forces.
Ma Qi was the father of the warlords Ma Buqing and Ma Bufang.
Since the early 8th century, Tibetans and Himalayan people have treasured "Namtars" as written or spoken narratives that demonstrate the realization of the Buddhist path by exceptional practitioners. These namtars, or spiritual biographies, serve as inspirational guides on the path to enlightenment.
Today, Namtars Foundation aims to record, preserve, and freely offer the world a written and electronic treasury of the oral wisdom of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism.
