Regarded as an emanation of Milarepa, he (1781-1851) was an extraordinary Amdo-born lama who spent much of his life in mountain retreats, including three years on an inaccessible island in Lake Kokonor. He received teachings from masters of all schools, most prominently Dzogchen from his root guru Chögyal Ngakgi Wangpo, a Mongolian king and disciple of the First Dodrubchen who had spread these teachings widely in Amdo. A prolific writer capable of composing a hundred pages daily, his most popular work is the poetic Khading Shoklap (The Flight of the Garuda) on Trekchö and Tögal.
