Located in the valley of the Tolung Chu (a tributary of the Kyi Chu) approximatively 50 km to the west of Lhasa, Tsurpu monastery is the stronghold of the Karma Kagyü tradition in Central Tibet. Founded in 1189 by the First Karmapa Düsum Khyenpa, Tsurpu has been since the seat of both the Karma Kagyü tradition and the Karmapa incarnation line. In the late 1907 or early months 1908, the encampment of Tulku Drimé Özer—who had arrived month earlier from Dartsang Kalzang (Golok)— started from Tsurpu his journey back from to Golok. It was there that Déwé Dorjé (Sera Khandro) met with Drimé Özer's group, after having fled during the night her brother’s house in Lhasa.
