Located in the Li Gorge, in the upper part of the Do Chu valley, in Golok, Dartsang Kalzang (‘The Monastery of the Fortunate Eon’) was first established as a Mani Wall place by Yungshül Sungchok Dorjé (1872-1952). In 1890, he invited and offered the place to his teacher Düdjom Lingpa—then fifty-five years old—, who made it his principal residence until his passing in December 1903.

Around the monastery, the area is a vast and open nomadic pasture land, surrounded by spectacular views of high alpine meadows.
