A territory of the eastern part of Kham, Sa-Ngen is located in the Gonjo area. It was often referred to as the "Badlands", and was considered a remote and isolated area within the Kham region.
Towards the end of his life, Düdul Dorjé Rolpa Tsal (1704?-1824)—the immediate predecessor of Düdjom Lingpa—travelled and settled in Sa-Ngen. Many of his family descendants were born there, including Jamyang Khyentsé Chökyi Lodrö (1893-1959).
Since the early 8th century, Tibetans and Himalayan people have treasured "Namtars" as written or spoken narratives that demonstrate the realization of the Buddhist path by exceptional practitioners. These namtars, or spiritual biographies, serve as inspirational guides on the path to enlightenment.
Today, Namtars Foundation aims to record, preserve, and freely offer the world a written and electronic treasury of the oral wisdom of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism.
