The last emperor of China, Puyi (1906–1967) reigned as the eleventh and final monarch of the Qing dynasty, from 1908 to 1912. When the Guangxu Emperor (1871–1908) died without an heir, Empress Dowager Cixi (1835–1908) picked his nephew Puyi, aged two, to succeed him as the Xuantong Emperor. Puyi's father, Zaifeng, Prince Chun, served as regent before Puyi was forced to abdicate as a result of the Xinhai Revolution in 1912, which ended two millennia of imperial rule and established the Republic of China (1912-1949).
Since the early 8th century, Tibetans and Himalayan people have treasured "Namtars" as written or spoken narratives that demonstrate the realization of the Buddhist path by exceptional practitioners. These namtars, or spiritual biographies, serve as inspirational guides on the path to enlightenment.
Today, Namtars Foundation aims to record, preserve, and freely offer the world a written and electronic treasury of the oral wisdom of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism.
