A Nyingma monastery of the Palyul tradition, Pennak was founded in 1824 by Pema Drondul Dorjé and is located on the right bank of the Mar Chu, across from Chakri Tang. After having received an invitation to become his consort from Gara Tertön Düdul Wangchuk Lingpa (a student of Düdjom Lingpa), Déwé Dorjé Sera Khandro travelled to Pennak. Pennak was also the main seat of Gara Gyalsé Padma Namgyal, a son of Gara Tertön Düdul Wangchuk Lingpa, one of the teachers of Jadral Sangyé Dorjé.

Since the early 8th century, Tibetans and Himalayan people have treasured "Namtars" as written or spoken narratives that demonstrate the realization of the Buddhist path by exceptional practitioners. These namtars, or spiritual biographies, serve as inspirational guides on the path to enlightenment.
Today, Namtars Foundation aims to record, preserve, and freely offer the world a written and electronic treasury of the oral wisdom of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism.
