Located on the left bank of the Ser Chu in Serta, Lama Rung (aka Lama Rong) is the name of a mountain hermitage founded by Düdjom Lingpa in 1880, when he was fourty-five years old.

From 1880 to 1903 when Düdjom Lingpa passed away, it remained a place dedicated to the practice of Dzogchen with other activity limited. Among all the students of Düdjom Lingpa who received Dzogchen teachings from him in Lama Rung, more than thirteen achieved the rainbow body.

In 1880, Chöjé Dampa Jikmé Püntsok (1933-2004) chose this very same site to establish his residence and build there what would become Larung Gar (short for Lama Rung Gar), The Dharma Encampment of Lama Rung.
