In the 17th century, when Tibet was invaded by Mongols headed by Güshi Khan, the Nyingma master and tertön Jatsön Nyingpo (1585-1656) unearthed the first Guru Rinpoché’s prophecies concerning Béyul Pémakö, a remote and unknown lands farther the gorge of the Yarlung Tsangpo Chu. The scrolls proclaimed Pemakö as the ultimate place of pilgrimage.

In one of Jatsön Nyingpo’s terma, it is stated that even taking seven steps toward this mysterious realm ensures rebirth in Pemakö’s innermost sanctum—Chimé Yangsang Né, “the innermost secret place of immortality.” According to popular legend, if one could actually find this place one would live to be a thousand years old, and at the time of death, dissolve into rainbow light.
