Hidden-land or ‘Secret-land’, Béyül refers to remote valleys or regions that Guru Rinpoche designated as places for meditation, spiritual accomplishment and renewal. Sometimes encompassing hundreds of square kilometres, hidden-lands are found in the Himalayan regions of Bhutan, India, Nepal, Sikkim and Tibet, and also in China and Pakistan. Béyüls are a legacy of Guru Rinpoche who, in the 8th century, identified and visited these places and foresaw they would be needed in the future for practitioners. According to prophecies, Béyuls are to be discovered or revealed by tertöns.
