Widely known as Mount Kailash, Gang Rinpoché is geographically significant as the source of four of Asia's major rivers, the Indus, Sutlej, Brahmaputra, and Karnali, which sustain millions of people across the continent. In Hindu and Buddhist cosmology, it is identified with Mount Meru, the mythical axis of the universe and center of the physical and spiritual world. In Tibet it is revered as the abode of Chakrasamvara, and devotees perform circumambulations around it.
Established on the slopes of Mount. Kailash, Namkha Khyung Dzong was a significant Dharma encampment founded by Péma Dégyal, an important student of Düdjom Lingpa. It became the main center for the Düdjom Tersar lineage in the western part of the Tibetan Plateau.
