A kingdom in the eastern part of Kham near the historical border between Tibet and China, Chakla was, along with Bathang, Lithang, and Dergé, part of the "Four Great Native Chiefdoms in Kham".
During the Qing dynasty, Chakla was considered a Tusi under the umbrella of the Qing Empire.
In 1911, the Kingdom of Chakla was annexed by the Qing dynasty, as a result of the military suppression by Zhao Erfeng (1845–1911).
Since the early 8th century, Tibetans and Himalayan people have treasured "Namtars" as written or spoken narratives that demonstrate the realization of the Buddhist path by exceptional practitioners. These namtars, or spiritual biographies, serve as inspirational guides on the path to enlightenment.
Today, Namtars Foundation aims to record, preserve, and freely offer the world a written and electronic treasury of the oral wisdom of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism.
