Along with Gang Rinpoché (Mount Kailash), Hépori, and Kawa Karpo, Amnyé Machen is one of the four main sacred mountains of Tibet. This 100-kilometer-long massif of Amnyé Machen, ‘Ancestral Protector of Machen’, rises at the northeastern extremity of the Tibetan Plateau, in a bend of the Yellow River, which is known in Tibet as Ma Chu and defines Golok’s frontier with China.
Since the early 8th century, Tibetans and Himalayan people have treasured "Namtars" as written or spoken narratives that demonstrate the realization of the Buddhist path by exceptional practitioners. These namtars, or spiritual biographies, serve as inspirational guides on the path to enlightenment.
Today, Namtars Foundation aims to record, preserve, and freely offer the world a written and electronic treasury of the oral wisdom of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism.
