Located on the banks of the Nyi Chu (one of the tributaries of the Nyak Chu), downstream of Awo Séra Tekchen Chökhor Ling, Shyichen Kharmar Sangngak Tengyé Ling is a branch of Katok Dorje Den, the stronghold of the Katok tradition in Kham. The monastery was founded by Lingzhak Orgyen Lhundrub, a student of one of the Trimé Shyingkyong Tulkus. Over time, three main lines of successive emanations appeared in Shyichen Kharmar Sangngak Tengyé: (1) the Shyichen Kyabgön Öntrul (aka Önpo), (2) the Bairo Tulkus and (3) the Namtrul. Before the 1960’s, Shyichen Bairo Tulku Jamyang Tenpé Gyaltsen (1933-2017) was based in Shyichen Kharmar Sangngak Tengyé Ling.
