Sangyé Tongtsa Nyi are the thousand and two supreme nirmanakaya buddhas to appear during our fortunate aeon. Their names are enumerated in detail in the Kalpa Zangpö Do (Skt. Bhadrakalpasutra), the Fortunate Aeon Sutra.

Shakyamuni, the Buddha of our present age, is the fourth in succession. The sutra was taught by Shakyamuni Buddha in Vaishali at the request of bodhisattva Pramodyaraja.

In Tibet, this text has long functioned as a special ceremonial scripture read aloud by lamas on special occasions to foster well-being and good fortune, and is often kept on the family altar in Tibetan homes for this purpose.
