Namtar Shyal Sungma
The Namtar Shyal Sungma is the outer autobiography of Düdjom Lingpa. Initiated by a request made Lama Tséchu and Jampal to Düdjom Lingpa, the writing started in 1888 in Lama Rung. The text was finalized around the year 1892 in Dartsang Kalzang, when in a vision Yeshe Tsogyal urged Düdjom Lingpa to quickly complete this text.
While categorized as an outer autobiography, the Namtar Shyal Sungma is a chronological series of mostly magical events for only those which Düdjom Lingpa could recall the year, month, and day, and which he “considered to be important.”
Since the early 8th century, Tibetans and Himalayan people have treasured "Namtars" as written or spoken narratives that demonstrate the realization of the Buddhist path by exceptional practitioners. These namtars, or spiritual biographies, serve as inspirational guides on the path to enlightenment.
Today, Namtars Foundation aims to record, preserve, and freely offer the world a written and electronic treasury of the oral wisdom of Tibetan and Himalayan Buddhism.
