In 1857, Gili Wangli brought Düdjom Lingpa into his wealthy family in the Gönang valley of Padma, Golok, where the family-owned extensive herds of sheep, yaks, and horses built through trade with Chinese merchants. According to oral traditions, the Gili family essentially adopted Düdjom Lingpa, bringing him from his birthplace on Nubzur in the lower Ser Chu valley of Serta to stay with them in Padma, where he became their friend and helper.
