A complex of ancient caves located east of Lhasa in Taktsé County, about 20km north-east of Lhasa, Drak Yerpa has been an important site in pre-Buddhist Tibet.

Later, it became a meditation site for king Songtsen Gampo, Guru Rinpoché, Atisha, and many others. After having killed the evil king Langdarma, Lhalung Palgyi Dorjé hid in Drak Yerpa and meditated in the caves for over two decades.

In the eleventh century, a Kadam monastery called Yerpa Drubdé was founded at the site.
