As one of the principal yidams in all Nyingma traditions and part of the Kagyé, Dorjé Phurba (Skt. Vajrakilaya) has been transmitted continuously from master to student since the 9th century, primarily through the Kama lineage from Nupchen Sangyé Yéshé, while the Terma revelations of Dorjé Phurba (Vajrakilaya) have been discovered by numerous tertöns, beginning with Nyangrel Nyima Özer in the 12th century.

Both streams—Kama and Terma—emphasize the wrathful deity's power to dispel obstacles and subjugate negative forces, though terma lineages are considered especially potent due to their fresh revelation and direct connection to Guru Rinpoché's intent.

Düdjom Lingpa received two distinct Dorjé Phurba revelations: the extensive Phurba Sangwé Gyachen and the more concise Phurba Déshek Nyingpo, as part of his Kagyé terma.
